Kevin Boucher's Backyard Observatory (Observatory Tours #5)
My friend Kevin Boucher is a wealth of knowledge on astrophotography and was kind enough to let me tour his backyard observatory in Central Massachusetts. This is the fifth part of a series where I interview people who have designed their own observatories: ua-cam.com/play/PLrzbdmripj1dzgPci-ibPcWXo1-a1bYMG.html
Kevin's observatory is based on the Skyshed plans you can buy here: skyshed.com/ If you are planning to build a shed-style observatory, I think these plans are well worth getting. Even if you don't follow them exactly, there are lots of great construction photos and tips you will find useful.

    Great video - do you have any data on seeing conditions? My gut tells me seeing deteriorated during the night seeing the graphs. I think on the lighter scope, the AM3 was getting worse tracking due to seeing and also why the stars are a bit softer……

    How do you figure out the power requirements?

    • @NebulaPhotos
      @NebulaPhotos 2 дні тому

      Most accurate way would be to get a power meter (called an 'ammeter') that can actually measure the draw in amps. But a good enough way is just google it, lots of discussions on Cloudy Nights about how much each piece of equipment draws on average, and then you just add all of your equipment requirements together. For example: Camera cooler 2A + Dew Heaters 4A + Mount 2A = 8 amps per hour. So a battery rated at 40ah would give you 5 hours in that scenario.

      That will certainly work to start. You can try one of my 'no tracker' tutorials from a dark sky, and shoot some of the brightest Messier objects with it - the lagoon nebula featured in this video is a good one right now (rises after midnight in the N. Hemisphere, but rises earlier each night)

    4:16 well the age and roof are irrelevant, it could be moved and fixed to a foundation as well as some minor reinforcements made to handle the sliding roof. At that point cutting holes for the columns isn't that much of a issue. All this is assuming there isn't any major damage to the original frame.

  • @beenaplumber8379
    @beenaplumber8379 3 дні тому

    You went whizzing through a lot of clicks, sliders, and commands and one program installation without explaining why, or what the benefit would be. Why would you remove all the stars, paint over the blobs you didn't like, and then (somehow) add them back? I spent a lot of time on this video, and I'd hoped to learn how things could be done on the cheap (the only way I can afford to do it), and I'm not sure I learned anything I can use other than a few good websites for looking up sky conditions. What does it mean to move the histogram to the right, or to stretch the image? Your videos are all very long and very dense, yet somehow I get very little from them. The stuff I want to know most is the stuff you don't cover.

    • @NebulaPhotos
      @NebulaPhotos 3 дні тому

      I’d suggest getting a book like ‘The Deep Sky Imaging Primer’ by Charles Bracken. My tutorials are more learn by doing and once you start doing it, it will make more sense. This doesn’t work for everyone, so if you want more of the theory and the ‘why?’ Which it sounds like you do, check out his book. Cheers, Nico

The thing I like your channel is unlike some other, you slow down and explain everything, assuming we have a lot of beginners here, well, if I already know that why do i need to watch your video, right? so WELL DONE sir. Is the calibration frames also important for none-deep sky photography? like simple Milky Way landscape image with or without tracker? Also will I see a big different between only taking one Bias, Dark and Flat instead of 50 X of those? thanks.

    I did buy an extra long Vixen dovetail for my 30mm mini guide scope. It worked but wasn’t ideal. I switch between cameras and scopes, so I had to move the guide scope for each setup. (Each scope has its own dovetail plate, and then I have another for camera lenses.) But I now have a nice solution with excellent cable management. My guide scope is shoe-mounted on the side of my AM5 saddle plate. The AM5 manual says you can put an ASIair in that spot, but I put the ZWO 30F4 and ASI120MM guider there. I put my ASIair mini on the side of the AM5 next to the 12v output port. ZWO does not recommend it there, but with what I’ve done it is good and will not crash into the mount. It is mounted so the WiFi antenna is always pointing to Polaris. I bought very short USB cables with 90 degree connectors so that there is clearance to the Alt-Az portion of the AM5 base. It is also important to keep the Az lockdown levers moved flush up against the mount after you lock down. Anyway, power comes up from Jackery to the AM5 12v input. Then, I have a very short 12v cable with 90 degree connectors from AM5 12v output to ASIair mini 12v input. These two move together, so short cable is wrapped tight 1.5 times around the ASIair dovetail. Similarly, I have a very short USB cable with 90 degree connectors from ASIair to AM5. Again, these move together, so cable is just long enough and doesn’t even need to be wrapped around the ASIair dovetail. Now I need a longer and more flexible USB cable from ASIair to ASI120MM. I got one with 90 degree connectors, coiled so it stretches, and fabric sheathed. It goes from ASIair and wraps 1x times around the round black neck of AM5 that is under the saddle plate, and then into the ASI120. So it is never hanging loose. It accommodates pointing anywhere in the sky without any hang ups. It works rather perfect. For now, that is all my cabling. I’m shooting with my Fuji mirrorless camera, but eventually I will get the ASI2600 and deal with additional cables. But for now, when you look at my setup, you don’t even notice the cables except for the main power cable from the Jackery. And, with the guide scope on the side of the saddle plate, it’s easy to swap scopes and camera lenses at will without needing to move the guide scope. Also, even the AM5 carrying case has a cutout in the foam to accommodate the shoe on the side of the saddle plate. I don’t use the AM5 hand controller, so the ASIair mini fits inside that spot within the AM5 case. Anyway, with very careful selection of which cables to buy (on Amazon), I’ve got this setup really, really neat and tidy. I’ve never seen anyone else do it like this, especially putting the guide scope on the side of the saddle plate.

    need set up for any kind of astronomy like astrophotography and visual astronomy and solar photography and all of these here’s my goals capture wide images of Milky Way core in amazing details Capture Orion Nebula and horse head in one picture in amazing details capture andromeda galaxy in amazing details capture the moon and mars Jupiter Saturn in amazing details capture eagle nebula with pillar’s of creation in amazing details and see Jupiter in amazing details with Saturn and mars capture galaxies like the tail galaxy in amazing details or something I always forget names see Orion Nebula and andromeda and eagle and bubble nebula see galaxies in amazing details And I want it to see the nebula galaxies planets stars so good my history of astrophotography or astronomy stage 1 beginner I got the astroMaster 60mm and even though I wanted to get StarSense 10 inch but it’s fine so I tell my mom when they finished building my house I will buy telescope she said yes my mind was thinking bigger telescope means better stage 2 realised there is more i thought the night sky move slowly but after like 7 months with telescope I realised that there more of things of astronomy and now that where I knew what is astrophotography its Astro photography two things in one stage 3 professional here’s where I spent 600+ HOURS of learning and now a capture with my astroMaster 60 lt some decent images with it I did stack change colour and I did capture ring nebula before galaxy season and I change my mind I was going to buy nexstar 8se with wedge stage 4 thinking but I realised that nexstar is wobbly and not for astrophotography even if I put fastar technology so I thought go to red cat 71 but how I’m gonna see the wonders of our universe so I thought go to the advanced vx 8 inch sct but it’s not in my country Kuwait so I turned my head and I realised my budget is just 700 kd with my mom 250 kd so I need to spend it wisely so I find telescopes no one ever seen and I research and research and research over and over again but there’s no hope just I researched to see it’s not in my country so there will be delivery taks and if I found one it will be expensive like ubuy they literally made 2000kd for travel scope so ikarus technology is the only good Kuwait astrophotography delivery app so I said how much of taks will be so I opened scientific astronomy stage 5 now idk which telescope to buy My budget 2500$ us In my Kuwait country is 750 kd And my heart in astrophotography and visual astronomy so much that now I don’t have any idea of buying which telescope because like nexstar it’s for visual astronomy and like red cat it’s for astrophotography and like advanced vx 8 sct it’s not in my country and I’m just 14 and you are my favorite Astro UA-camr so I trust in you Edit I’m not pro or anything I’m just a teen the he’s heart was in astronomy when I was 7 and even my set up is still there for like 7 years and half but we don’t know maybe they will finish building my mom house tomorrow I guess And i need to be not that complex and not that easy like seestar 50s like in middle I like to curve light and stack and all of these things and my light pollution is growing but now I can barely see 2 stars and 2 nebula dust and moon and planets that means I’m in 7 or in like 1 year is 8 level sky night or because my country is all the people in one place so if I’m lucky to get car so nearly everyday astrophotography is 3 level so that takes maybe 2 weeks of waiting of telling my brother go out in desert in night I have big family and all my brothers love go to dark places so maybe but that just chance if I didn’t get car in 18 years old And I don’t care how messy the step up is or how clean it’s but I rather a clean one with no wires like wireless thing but that optional just make sure that it doesn’t make images bad or the see one eye pieces And I don’t care how light weight is it but I don’t like the giants like 20 inch or those but I don’t care how long is it going to set up because I already all the travelling tools and if you know of Middle East it’s maybe all year is clear so half hour of putting things together no problem but I don’t want to spend all night but if it’s 1 hour or lower to set it up that fine even though I don’t want to spend hour but I don’t want a baby set up because that will be not good or visual astronomy so at least it’s 8 inch or 11 or 10 or 9.25 one of these because I like more of watching that thing not seeing on a tablet or laptop because to me that more fun but I still love astrophotography but I love visual astronomy so equally that now I’m typing this because I don’t have any idea of any telescope because if I bought the advanced vx 8 sct it will cost all my money so I don’t have any to spend on dedicated astronomy camera and auto guider or filters And that my problem because my family won’t let me spend more than 500 kd or 1628 dollars even though my mom gave me 250 kid that means all my money is just 750kd or in 2500 us or in the real number is 2477 dollars so I could spend one red cat 51 or 71 with star tracker but that will make no money left for visual astronomy or planetary imaging And that all it I hope somebody read this and find me one and if I’m lucky maybe the creator of this channel but I did it and thanks to anyone who read this mess

    Jesus. 9:55 is what you are looking for. 15 minutes of scrubbing later... most people searching for this video have already EDITED the photos. We just wanted to know how to make it a VIDEO, rather than stills.

      For a Timelapse to look correct, all the photos have to be edited with the exact same adjustments. I’m not sure why you think people would have already done that step correctly. As a long time teacher, I can assure you that leaving out steps is not the way to go. It usually just leads to more confusion and wrong assumptions for the vast majority. All the tutorials on my UA-cam channel attempt to be as complete as possible for this reason.

    To have an observatory is the top goal, but IMO to automate everything is exactly not the direction I want to go. I want hands-on with my equipment and mostly look through eyepieces with my own eyes. Looking at a computer screen, for me, isn’t what this hobby is about.

    Great video! Thanks Nico! BTW, I see the word Outro of the video content. Do you speak Portuguese?

    Nice. I really like that. Mine is much larger and uses a tri-beam with two separate openings. But it's very similar. Mine is a manually pulled roof with rope and is tied down open and latched and locked when closed. I too use an air-conditioned system that run panels and batteries to power its dehumidifier 24/7. These are not a perfect solution but I have no problems with that. Astrophotography is not a perfect thing ... we strive. Well done, sir.

    Fantastic find for us Nico. But I’m not gunna lie, when I saw the thumbnail I thought you had opened the wallet for your observatory. (I wasn’t paying close enough attention) Cheers

    I had Skyshed build my 8x10 observatory 19 years ago. My roof is just starting to get stiff when opening and closing due to the external supports twisting. I'll probably replace them with wood.

    Astro photos take blood, sweat and tears to take. Mostly blood in this case.
